Makeup Artist Study and Comparison

Jack P. Pierce:

Jack Pierce had a variety of jobs before becoming a makeup artist, ranging from baseball to working in the “fledgling motion picture industry in the 1910s and 1920s, trying his hand at a variety of jobs from nickelodeon manager to stuntman to assistant cameraman” (imbd, No Date). He first got started in makeup after he drifted into acting and he started working at Vitagraph and the original Fox Studios in the 1920s, then he got a job at Universal where he became the head of department in 1928 and he worked on the last of the silent films made at the studio.

One of Jacks earlier works, The Man Who Laughs (1928) was one of the main visual inspirations for The Joker in DCs Batman which was released in 1943 (American Cinematographer, 2019). Also, Jack Pierce’s version of Frankenstein is still being used today and is most used at Halloween for children’s Halloween costumes.
