The Comparison of Alcohol and Grease Paints on Wax

The Comparison of Alcohol and Grease Paints on Wax:

Alcohol paints give a more subtle effect and they blended into the wax and skin, they were also easily layered and very buildable, this helped create a more realistic look overall. However, the grease paints sat on top of the wax rather than soaking into the wax and skin which means it’s harder to blend into the skin, this also means that the colours were a lot more opaque and trying to layer the product often just removes the paint from beneath it.

Alcohol and grease paints are similar in many ways, they’re both used in film and TV as they won’t be affected by water as easily as aqua paints which means it’ll last longer which is needed for long filming hours. They both don’t need touch-ups very often, alcohol paints will need touch-ups less than grease paints, they are both also applied very easily, and they can both give realistic looks. Both products are very versatile, and they can be used on lots of different products and they can be used on lots of different areas of the body.

However, they are also very different, for example, alcohol paints soak into the skin whereas grease paints sit on top of the skin. Grease paints can also be used as they are whereas alcohol paints need isopropyl alcohol to activate them and grease paints are safer to use on sensitive areas such as around they eyes. On average, grease paints are cheaper than alcohol paints however, alcohol paints often last longer than grease paints meaning they will not need to be repurchased as often. Finally, grease paints are a lot more opaque than alcohol paints however, alcohol paints are more buildable than grease paints and alcohol paints dry down whereas grease paints may need to be powdered to prevent them transferring.

Overall, I preferred using the alcohol paints over the grease paints and the alcohol paints gave me my desired look. I preferred using the alcohol paints as I found it easier to build up the product and it blended into the wax which overall, gave a more realistic look. The alcohol paints could also be altered a lot easier than the grease paints as isopropyl alcohol could be used to disperse the colour, I also believe alcohol paints are easier to work with as they give a more sheer finish which means that any mistakes won’t be as obvious which is good for beginners.
