The Middle Ages (12th-15th Century) and the Renaissance Period (14th-17th Century) Research:

Women in the Renaissance period had very pale skin which would be achieved using wheat, egg whites, lead or even bleeding. Women would also use rouge which was red on the cheeks and the lips and the lips were also a lot fuller than women in the 12th Century. They eyebrows were well groomed as body hair on women was frowned upon, this also meant they shaved their faces. As we can see in these paintings by Leonardo da Vinci called ‘Portrait of an Unknown Woman’ (which is a painting of La Belle Ferroniere) which he painted in 1490 and ‘Lady with an Ermine’ which he painted in 1489, women’s makeup was very natural and the focus was on how the skin looked.

Women’s hair was also extremely long and extensions were used, the hair styles also included lots of braids, Janet Stephens recreated an authentic Renaissance hairstyle and inspiration from the Renaissance has been used for a lot of the ‘Game of Thrones’ hairstyles and all of Padamé Amidala’s hairstyles from the Star Wars film series are inspired by this  time period.
