University Research:

Grimsby:

Grimsby Institute

There’s a course available at Grimsby called “BA (Hons) Special Effects Make Up Design and Prosthetics” which is a 3 year course which will allow me to develop my skills in things like designing, sculpting, moulding, casting, application and painting. Students will get the opportunity to be taught by and work with professionals who have lots of experience and the course will allow me to gain the skills and knowledge needed to create characters for film and TV. The cost for this course is £8,500 per year and students are required to buy a kit for £400. To enter I will need 80 UCAS points and at least a grade C in both GCSE Maths and English, “this equates to MMP or above at BTEC National Diploma, CCD at A-Level, or Merit on the Diploma Foundation Studies (Art, Design and Media)” (University Centre Grimsby, 2020). This course also has an amazing reputation in the industry and “benefits from links to a number of high-profile operators such as Millennium FX, Hybrid FX and Kristyan Mallet Make Up Effects” (University Centre Grimsby, 2020). Students are also encouraged to work with undergraduates from the Faculty of Digital and Creative Industries at Grimsby to gain real-life experience in the industry. This is also a full-time course meaning I will need to attend university 2-3 days a week.

Personally, I feel like this could be a very good choice for me as I will develop makeup skills and further develop my employability skills, I will also have the opportunity to gain experience in the industry both with undergraduates and professionals. However, I think that the anatomy and lifelike sculpting would be my least favourite part of the course as I don’t find it as interesting as things such as casualty simulation.

There are some deprived areas however most crime is outside of the immediate university area, also, in July 2020 there was a total of 822 street level crime incidents and only 288 of these incidents were violent crime (iLiveHere UK, 2020). One of the main benefits of living here would being able to see family that lives in Lincolnshire more often as I currently only see them once or twice a year, sometimes even less.

Grimsby doesn't have much accommodation available but it is very close to the university, there are 3 main buildings available and these are called Scartho Hall, Humber Lodge, and Welholme House.

Scartho Hall "is only a 15 minute walk from the main campus and just a 20-minute bus journey into the town centre" and it is between £85.00 and £107.18 per week depending on the room you require, it also has free parking for residents (Grimsby Institute, No Date).

Humber Lodge is "located just across the road from Nuns Corner Campus and is just a 15 minute walk into the Town Centre" and it is between £82.82 and £90.00 per week depending on the room you require and it has free parking for residents (Grimsby Institute, No Date).

Welholme House is "located on a quiet corner of the main road running through to Grimsby town centre, with the main campus only a seven minute walk away and the town centre a 15 minute walk" and it is between £100.00 and £107.18 per week depending on the room you require, it also has free parking for residents (Grimsby Institute, No Date).

The closest city is also Hull which means that you would have to travel to Hull to visit the bars and the main shops and there is very little around Grimsby itself.

Bolton:

The course available at Bolton University is called “BDes (Hons) Special Make-up Effects for Film and TV” and it’s a 3 year course which helps develop your special effects skills to allow you to transform someone using makeup and prosthetics while also learning how to combine this with 3D computer graphics to create amazing looks that work on screen. The university also provide all the makeup needed to complete this course so that you can focus on learning how to use industry-standard materials instead of worrying about having to pay for them. Neill Gorton is also their Visiting Professor of Special Effects. The staff also have industry experience and we will be taught how to create characters such as aliens and zombies and subtle effects such as scars, tattoos or wrinkles (University of Bolton, 2020).

Students are also provided with their own workbench and locker in the special effects studio, we also have access to the “make-up studio, casting and moulding room, boutique film studio, and 3D workshop” (University of Bolton, 2020). We are also encouraged to “research, analyse, design and develop make-up techniques” so that when we’re given a script we can “find the most time-efficient, cost-effective and visually impressive way to turn that vision into reality” (University of Bolton, 2020). Entry requirements include 104 UCAS points, a level 3 qualification and 5 GCSEs at a grade C or above including maths and English and this is a full-time course which costs £9,250 per year.

Personally, I think this is another viable option as it will also help me develop my makeup skills and my employability skills without having to worry about the cost of materials. This course will also help us develop new skills in things such as postiche work however I feel this would be my least favourite part of the course as it’s very delicate work that requires a lot of patience and precision.

One of the positives of living in Bolton is that there’s an extremely low crime rate and the university is quite close to the city centre, however, the negative is that it’s so far from home, it’s a 2 hour drive and 3 hours on the train.

Bolton's accommodation is Orlando Village Halls of Residence which is a 10 minute walk from the campus and all the bills are included as well as WIFI. rooms range from £99 to £125 per week and free parking is available (Orlando Village, 2020).

Bolton is also one of the main towns in Manchester which means that you are very close to bars and clubs as well as shopping centres in Manchester so this is important for student life as it's very close to the main centre.

  1. Really good work and look into what university life would be like, added bonus being careful and looking at the crime rates. What about accommodation and general University life? As in Grimsby has a low amount of accommodation to pick from, mostly being halls and there isnt particularly a big University scene until you get into Hull, where as Bolton is a main town in Greater Manchester so has more options. Images would be good to use here as well.
