Ear Casting

Ear Casting:

Step 1: Clean the ears to remove any excess dirt then coat with Vaseline to prevent the alginate pulling out any of the small fine hairs. Use some more Vaseline to smooth down the baby hairs around the ears and use clingfilm to cover the rest of the hair and put a small ball of cotton into the ear to stop the alginate getting into the ear canal.

Step 2: Cut the bottom of a cup to fit around the ear which will hold the alginate in place and place this over the ear.

Step 3: Mix the alginate following the directions on the packet and pour it inside the cup onto the ear and allow to set.

Step 4: Once the alginate is set, remove it from the ear but be careful to prevent the alginate breaking.

Step 5: Place the alginate casts into another cup then mix the plaster of Paris following the instructions of the packet and pour this over the alginate sculptures and allow it to set.

Step 6: Once the plaster has set remove it from the cup and remove the alginate to reveal the cast of the ear. You can then use clay to sculpt different shapes and make prosthetics that will fit the ears perfectly.

Step 7: Repeat steps 1-6 on the other side so that you have a cast of both ears.
