Production 1 - Filmed Pantomime - Babes in the Woods Trailer

Production 1 - Filmed Pantomime - Babes in the Woods Trailer:

30th September 2020:

Today we started the production work for a filmed pantomime so as a group we read through the script; we then began to discuss the different characters. We wrote down each character and discussed what makeup could be used for each character, this included straight makeups, lots of blush and freckles for the school children and face paint for the pirate. We discussed the colours which would be used, these included reds and greens as the theme was Christmas. After discussing the makeup, we discussed the hair and as a group we decided that the wizard should have a beard and that the dame would wear a wig. We then spent some time discussing each other’s strengths and weaknesses to help determine who would do each character, we made a list and decided to have a meeting with some of the actors to look at the costumes.

During our production meeting we followed health and safety guidelines by adhering to social distancing guidelines and when having any contact with the actors we adhered to social distancing guidelines by staying 2 metres apart and 1 metre when 2 metres wasn’t possible, we also wore masks and disinfected all surfaces.

I and 3 other makeup artists went to meeting with the actors to look at the costumes, we took photos which we could then show the rest of the group. After discussing the costumes with the rest of the group we all went to create moodboards for the characters we would be doing the makeup for.

I created moodboards for a school child and another for a fairy.

This is the moodboard for the fairy:

After creating our moodboards we all created our designs and presented them to the group to have them all approved by the group. While creating my designs I had taken into consideration that the pantomime would be filmed rather than performed on stage which means that HD techniques would be used and the makeup didn’t have to be as intense as it would be for stage due to the distance being a lot shorter. Having our designs approved by the group and discussing as a group meant that the designs were coherent, and it meant that we were prepared for the next day to complete the makeup.

1st October 2020

Today we were doing the makeup for the filmed pantomime, we didn’t have chance to practice the makeup meaning we had to be confident in the makeup we were doing. Mia was unable to come into college which means another makeup had to do the makeup for her character, Phebe put herself forward and I said that I would help if needed.

I didn’t have a character on the morning so I went round the group and was helping if people needed help, this included helping with a characters hair and supporting Phebe when she was doing the makeup for the pirate by explaining how to create a beard using face paint.

On the afternoon I had to do the makeup for one of the school children and the fairy, while doing these makeups I followed the government guidelines by wearing my medial mask and a visor, I also avoided touching the face with my hands as much as possible. I demonstrated good hygiene skills by keeping my makeup bay clean and organized and I used the cut away method when using the products. I also demonstrated good communication skills by making sure my performer felt safe and was comfortable.

When doing this makeup I used HD products as the makeup would be taken on camera and I also took into consideration the lighting as it would be filmed in a classroom meaning that the lighting would be artificial but it wouldn’t be too intense, this meant that I didn’t have to use a darker shade of foundation as I would if it was performed on stage.

To create this makeup I used straight makeup but I added more blush to create the appearance of rosy cheeks and I added freckles to create a cheerful look often found on young school children, I also braided the hair to contribute to this effect.

The base was flawlessly blended, and the makeup was intense enough to be seen from a short distance and it also appeared flawless on camera. The makeup worked under intense lighting, artificial lighting, and natural lighting. However, to improve I could have added a little bit more blush as it was too subtle, and I could have added some more smaller freckles to make them look more realistic.

After completing the makeup for the school child, I completed the makeup for the fairy, however, I had to slightly change my design as I only had white glitter available rather than the pink glitter that was used for my design. When creating this makeup, I had to take into consideration the lighting as this would also be filmed in a classroom under artificial lighting.

To create this makeup, I used straight makeup, but I added some glitter to the eyes and cheeks and used more blush to give a magical effect and to make the look more girly. Emily also helped curl the hair while I was doing the makeup to save time.

The base was flawlessly blended, and the makeup worked under intense lighting, artificial lighting, and natural lighting. The lips were even and the skin was even and looked healthy, however, to improve I could add a more reflective glitter to the eyes and cheeks to give more of a magical effect and I could add some glitter to the lips to add to this effect.
